When it comes to your piercing jewellery, gold is always a classic. But if you’ve browsed ourgold jewellery collection or booked a styling session, you might have noticed that we have options: solid gold and anodised “gold” titanium. They look similar, but they’renot the same and knowing the difference can help you choose the right piece for your piercing journey.
Here’s a quick guide to help you weigh your options.
What Is Solid Gold?
Solid gold jewellery is exactly what it sounds like, made entirely of gold, usually alloyed with small amounts of other metals for strength. At Metal Morphosis, we use 14ct and 18ct gold, never anything lower, because lower carats equate to more base metals and a higher risk of irritation.
Pros:
-
Timeless, luxe, and never goes out of style
-
Hypoallergenic (especially in 14ct+)
-
Doesn’t tarnish over time
-
Great for healed piercings and long-term wear
-
True gold colour for those who prefer gold tone.
Things to know:
-
It’s softer than titanium, so more delicate styles need careful handling
-
It comes with a higher price tag, but you're paying for purity and longevity
-
We only use nickel-free alloys to ensure they're piercing-safe
What is Gold Titanium?
Gold titanium isn’t actually made of gold. It’s implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) that gets its golden colour through a process calledanodising. This process uses electricity to change the surface of the metal, creating a gold tonewithout any paint or plating. The result is safe, durable jewellery with the luxe look of gold and the strength of titanium. However, as with all anodising, be it blue, green, gold or pink- over time this will fade back to the titanium’s original blueish grey colour. It should also be taken into consideration that, due to the original colour of titanium, that when we anodise jewellery to “gold” it will always have a cooler or greenish tinge to it- so if you love a warm “true” gold tone, it’s always advisable to invest in a solid gold piece.
Pros:
-
Super strong and lightweight
-
Biocompatible, making it a great choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies to metals
-
More affordable than solid gold
-
Highly resistant to bending, cracking, or scratches.
Things to know:
-
It’s not “real” gold all the way through
-
Overtime, the anodized color will eventually fade back to silver.
